Will Google Founders Lose Their Say?
The co-founders of Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page have just had their voting shares reduced from 59% of the votes to 485 of the votes. Since they are no longer the majority vote holder this can mean changes to the Google search engine that we have grown so accustomed to.
There have been discussions about the amount of information that is stored by Google and their responsibility to keep that information secure, along with the privacy needed for any release of information. One of the things discussed was the fact that although you may feel secure with the current make up of Google and their level of integrity that at any point Google could be bought out by another entirety, sold off or change hands in a manner that would allow all this current data to change hands.
Although they are losing some of their power, their commitment to Google is still as strong as ever. With the current CEO on their sides they still have the majority vote and they do not foresee any power shifting at this time. and even with the reduction in their voting power with the help of the ten percent of the shares held by their current CEO, there should not be a relative power shift at this time.
As Bing Gains Should Google Be Concerned?
It seems as if Google has some new competition in the world of search engines. Have you noticed that whenever someone is talking computers either the name Google or Bing, seem to pop into the conversation? What many are now pondering is if Bing could be the beginning of the end for Google.
Well, Bing is still a little fish in the big internet pond and of course Google is like the world dominator, but a slow and steady gain of new users for Bing could show a marked decline in business for Google over time. The current trend shows that Bing is gaining, where Google is maintaining, and Yahoo is the one that is losing. However, it is not insignificant as some might think because even though Bing is currently very non-threatening it will grow as it takes over the Yahoo market and this coupled with the fact that it is backed by Microsoft could throw a curve ball into Google’s plans for internet domination.
Now experts disagree on the effect that Bing’s increase will have on Google, with one firm saying that this will not affect Google and another stating that Google will begin to show a downward trend as Bing slowly creeps up the ladder of internet success. Google is certainly still holding its own and plans to continue to stay well ahead of the pack in this search engine race.
What Search Engine ‘Spiders’ Are And How They Work
Sometimes referred to as ‘spiders’ or crawlers, automated search engine robots seek out web pages for the user. Just how do they accomplish this and is this of importance? What is the real purpose of these robots?
A search engine robot is a very simple program that has some basic functionality to help it understand web pages. However, spiders only have limited functionality to interpret websites: they cannot interpret frames, Flash video, images, or JavaScript; they can’t enter password-protected areas and can’t click buttons; they can be stopped by dynamically-generated URLs and JavaScript navigation. However, within HTML code, they’re able to retrieve data by travelling through the web to find information and links.
The robot makes a list of the web pages in the system at the ‘submit a URL page, then searches for these web pages in order from the list the next time it goes on the web. Sometimes a robot will find your page whether you have submitted it or not because other site links may lead the robot to your site. Building your link popularity and getting links from other topical sites back to your site is important. The first thing a robot does when it arrives is to check for a robots.txt file. This file tells the robots which sites are off-limits. Usually these are files that should be of no concern because they are binaries or other files that are not needed by the robot.
Changing Up Search Engines
Google is the big shot of search engines. It is on the top of the food chain and not very many other search engines come close to it even. Yahoo and Bing are thinking about coming together and merging but even then, it doesn’t seem like a huge threat to Google.
There has been talk however, that with the amount of information Google currently holds on the population of the world, it possess more information than that of any world power, and as it currently hands onto its internet search data for 18 months. This data remains forever as property of Google and is shelved and stored. To date all internet searches are still being stored by Google.
Now you may not be concerned about this information, however keep in mind Big Brother can see what you do and internet searches can come back to bite you depending on what you have researched, so it is important to have the security of having your name linked to said searches for the shortest amount of time possible.
